Each EU Member State is required to establish preventive services protecting against occupational risks as set by the EU framework Directive 89/EEC on the introduction of measures to encourage improvements in the safety and health of workers at work. Different expressions, such as a workplace health service, health service at work or the currently used occupational health service, have been used to specify this system of services.
Occupational health service is mainly aimed at providing preventive health care to working people. The institution of occupational health service must be understood on the background of its key notions, such as work, occupational safety, risk factors and mainly prevention of health impairment due to performed work.
According to the Health and Safety Act No. 124/2006 Coll. L. Sections 21 and 26, any employer is obliged to ensure the provision of occupational health service. The implementation of preventive work-related medical examinations is regulated by Section 19 of the Public Health Act No. 126/2006 Coll. L. and relating legal instrument. The Ordinance of the Ministry of Health of the Slovak Republic No. 458/2006 Coll. L., which came to force and effect on July l4, 2006, sets detail requirements with respect to the scope and content of occupational health service. Based on this Ordinance, the execution of occupational health service is licence-based and the licence is to be granted under the set conditions by the Public Heath Authority of the Slovak Republic.
In March 2007, our occupational health service team was granted such licence upon the decision of the Public Health Authority of the Slovak Republic. The licence will expire in 2012.
